Hair Loss During Chemotherapy

Some of the newer, more targeted chemotherapy drugs will not affect your hair badly. But the majority of drugs used do reason hair loss. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to restrict it. Depending on the drug, your hair may gradually thinner before you lose it or you may lose all your hair at once.

For example:

•The  Cytoxan which is breast cancer drug (cyclophosphamide) causes hair thinning but not complete hair loss.

•Adriamycin (doxorubicin) causes hair to thin during the first three weeks of treatment, then all the hair falls out.

•With Taxol (paclitaxel), hair loss happens very suddenly. You will likely wake up one morning with your hair on your pillow.

Most patients cut hair before they start chemotherapy because they want to prepare yourself emotionally for the change, . Others choose to have their heads shaved. Just be assured it will grow back, often within a few weeks of completing chemotherapy.

Please, do not be sad and fight your disease because life is beautiful in spite of everything.
